Welcome to the new session of Service Learning for 2017

Each  new session, Ms. Lynam and I plan and organize trips for our students to participate in. Sometimes they are merely tours of non-profit organizations and others are service-oriented. In either case, students use this opportunity to learn about community organizations and how each one is tailored to provide service to its residents. Here are some highlights of what our students did for this session.

Working with Holling Heights studemts at UNO

Ms. Loftus' Service Learning class partnered with Holling Heights Elementary last year. We have started a 3 part project that will be the center attraction at the Omaha Public Library in March.

The 1st part is the collaboration of stories between both classes and will be placed in various OPL locations. Our hopes is that the community will share their own stories and place them at the end of our stories.

The 2nd part is the mural, which will be hung in the atrium of the Holling Heights Elementary school.  The theme is that we are :same, same, but different" so we are using hands to express our differences but sameness.

The 3rd part of the partnership is that we celebrate ALL cultures through a festivities during the Spring.

Learning about the NE Humane Society

est 1875

Touring the humane society is always a nice treat for the students as this type of organization is not common in most countries.

The director, Kerry Ecklebe has been a gracious host in taking our students on a fantastic tour that explains the process that begins at the surrendering of the animal to the adoption. She shows how the animals come to their organization and how they are taken care of, once they have arrived. It is a very interesting venture.

Some of our students do return to adopt a pet, which is what we all hope for: that our students appreciate the love that an animal can bring into their lives, and how they are saving two lives and not just the one, as Kerry often says during the tour.

The NE Humane Society is always in need of donations and volunteers!
